The Telegraph claim that Tottenham Hotspur’s option to buy Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso will only be active for two weeks during next summer’s transfer window.

Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis came with a surprise

As part of the agreement to sell Giovani Lo Celso to Betis on deadline day, Spurs have acquired an option to buy Cardoso for a fixed fee.

According to reports, the Lilywhites will have to pay £21m to sign the USA international next summer, with some sources even suggesting that if Ange Postecoglou’s men decide against activating it, they will automatically get a sell-on clause for the player (Football.London).

There are also reports that Tottenham have a sell-on clause for Giovani Lo Celso, should Betis ever choose to sell the Argentine on (Football Insider).

Spurs have just two weeks to sign Cardoso

The Telegraph have now also confirmed the presence of such an option but they make it clear the clause will only be valid for a two-week period in the summer of 2025.

If Spurs do not activate it in that time frame, they will have to enter into negotiations with Betis to sign the 22-year-old and would have to compete with the other clubs for the player’s signature.

Cardoso has not made the best start to the 2024/25 season, but will surely be looking to impress the North London hierarchy in order to earn a summer transfer.

Spurs Web Opinion

One would expect Postecoglou, Lange and the Tottenham hierarchy to make the decision on whether to sign Cardoso before the summer window even opens.

The two-week window is thus unlikely to be a restraint, especially given that the fee has been fixed and there are no negotiations involved.
