Micah Richards believes there are a lot of positives to take from Tottenham’s performance at St James’ Park, although he admitted that the result will be frustrating given the dominance that Spurs enjoyed.

Tottenham looked good against Newcastle

There was already some discontent among sections of the Spurs fan base leading up to the game as they felt that the club should have done more in the transfer window.

That has now seemingly boiled over on social media, with many supporters reacting angrily to Tottenham’s loss at St James’ Park.

However, there is no doubt that the Lilywhites were the better side for the majority of the game and would have ended up comfortable winners had they been a little more decisive and ruthless in the final third.

Ange Postecoglou admitted that the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow but remained adamant that his side would get their rewards if they kept delivering these sorts of performances (The Standard).

Richards echoed that sentiment, insisting that the signs of progress at Spurs are clear over the last 12 months.

The pundit said on The Rest Is Football podcast about Tottenham’s loss: “I wouldn’t be concerned, I would be frustrated is more the word I would use. I think in terms of wide areas, Alan mentioned it before, Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, getting into some really good positions.

“Odobert, I thought he played really well last week. Not so well in today’s game. Solanke gets injured. Van de Ven picks up a little injury.

“They’re just nearly there, they always seem to be nearly there. But they’ve made a lot of progress if you consider where they were before Postecoglou joined.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I firmly believe that performances are far more important than results at this stage of the season.

Our luck in front of goal will turn and having a poacher like Solanke could make a big difference over the course of the campaign, given the number of dangerous crosses we get into the box.
