Fabrizio Romano shuts down possibility of Arsenal signing 25-year-old striker

0 2

Arsenal have experienced a relatively quiet summer transfer window.

After signing Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad and bringing in Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, the Gunners have made just two new first-team signings.

However, even though the summer window will slam shut at 11 p.m. (UK time) on Friday night, Arsenal were recently linked with a late, but sensational, move for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

The Gunners’ lack of outright striking options sees Mikel Arteta forced to rely on Kai Havertz filling in for the injury-struck Gabriel Jesus, and according to Fichajes, that has prompted interest in Nunez.

The Uruguay international has not started in either of Liverpool’s opening two Premier League games with new manager Arne Slot preferring a front three featuring Luis Diaz, Mo Salah and Diogo Jota.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Arsenal signing Darwin Nunez?

Despite the 25-year-old’s lack of game time and his subsequent links to Arsenal, leading transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano claims the South American has no plans to leave Anfield this summer with the Italian guru ‘guaranteeing’ he will not be sold anytime soon.

“I saw some reports people sent me. Again I have no idea where this is coming from, about Darwin pushing to leave Liverpool,” he said to Playback, as quoted by TeamTalk.

Darwin Nunez in action for Liverpool.

“I think it’s important to say for those who follow Liverpool, who like Darwin or maybe don’t like Darwin, it’s important to clarify that Darwin is absolutely not planning to leave Liverpool, at least not this summer. I can guarantee this – Darwin is really, really focused on Liverpool.

“Darwin is really happy with Arne Slot, with what they had the chance to do in the first weeks together. He’s very happy with the new approach under the new coach. Full focus for Darwin on Liverpool. Obviously this season is going to be important, he wants to feel like an important player, so let’s see how the season will go.

“For this summer, it has never been a possibility for Darwin to leave Liverpool, never a possibility, and never Darwin has asked Liverpool to go. I can guarantee this exactly from those close to Darwin Nunez.”

Although it seems Arsenal will not be signing Liverpool’s number nine, Football Insider recently claimed Mikel Arteta could sanction a Deadline Day approach for wantaway Brentford forward Ivan Toney. It is worth noting though, The Athletic’s David Ornstein’s latest update suggests the 28-year-old England international is closing in on a lucrative move to Saudi side Al-Ahli.
