Ashley Phillips joins Stoke City on loan

Phillips is still waiting for his senior Tottenham debut after signing from Blackburn Rovers a year ago and that wait is now set to go on for another year after the centre-back joined Stoke on a season-long loan deal.

The youngster had an outstanding loan spell at Plymouth Argyle last season, being an ever-present in the club’s back three and playing a crucial role in helping them stay in the Championship.

The 19-year-old will now get an opportunity to showcase his quality at the Bet365 Stadium as he aims to aid the Potters in their hopes of getting to the top half of the table and perhaps even pushing for a playoff spot.

Stoke are happy to have Ash Phillips

Schumacher is certainly pleased to have Phillips on board, insisting that the on-loan Tottenham man can be a key player for his side this season.

The Stoke boss told Stoke Sentinel about his newest signing: “Ash is a good player. He’ll add something to us. He did really well last year on his loan spell at Plymouth.

“He’s a real good profile, big, physical, he can run. He’s comfortable on the ball. He’s a good addition to the squad, especially because we’ve got Michael Rose out injured and he still will be for another couple of weeks.

“We’ve had young Jaden in and around the squad who’s 17 and a brilliant player and is going to need time to develop. To strengthen in that area was really important and I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to do it.”

“What Ash has got on Jaden is half-a-season in the Championship, he’s been playing with a Premier League team in Spurs throughout all of the pre-season. They signed him from Blackburn for good money and they’ve got high hopes for him.

“We’re not expecting too much too soon from Jaden but if he’s needed, as he’s shown already, he’s a really good player – and as is Freddie, who has done well for us. But we have to make sure we have to get the first team squad as strong as we possibly can.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am sure Tottenham would have spoken to the decision-makers at Stoke and to Schumacher to discuss whether Phillips would get regular game time before agreeing to loan him.

The youngster will want to continue building on the impressive performances he delivered at Home Park Stadium last season and would be hoping to catch Postecoglou’s eye.
