‘Would be surprised’ – Alasdair Gold expects Postecoglou to start Spurs star vs Everton

Ange Postecoglou expects Dejan Kulusevski to come into Tottenham’s starting eleven for the clash against Everton on Saturday.

It came as a surprise to many when Kulusevski was left on the bench by Ange Postecoglou for Spurs’ season opener against Leicester City.

The Swede had been one of Tottenham’s best players in pre-season, albeit in a different role, playing as a false nine in a lot of those matches.

Brennan Johnson, who got the nod to start on the right, had an outing to forget and when Kuluseveski did eventually come on, it was in place of James Maddison in the number ten role.

Postecoglou will want to see a response from his players in Tottenham’s first home game of the season against the Toffees after the disappointing manner in which they threw away two points at the King Power Stadium.

Kulusevski to start against Everton?

The Australian faces some tough selection decisions ahead of the game and Gold expects him to bring Kulusevski back into the side.

When asked about the former Juventus star being left out in the Leicester game, the journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “I thought it was very harsh on Kulusevski. Ange wanted pace down the flanks but the Swede was Spurs’ best player this summer by a long distance.

“I would be surprised if he doesn’t start against Everton as he can battle and provide the quality.”

Kulusevski is evidently much better centrally than he is out wide in Tottenham’s system. The Swede is not really a typical Ange winger as he does not have the pace and directness to consistently take on his man.

However, Ange has no choice but to play him on the right this Saturday as he is certainly not going to consider leaving Maddison out.
