‘A much better team’ – Postecoglou reveals Heung-min Son’s best position at Spurs

Ange Postecoglou thinks Tottenham are a much better team when Son Heung-min plays on the left, with the Australian suggesting that Dominic Solanke’s arrival will free up the South Korean to play in his best position.

Tottenham have added reinforcements to their forward line, with Dominic Solanke arriving from Bournemouth for a club-record fee while the young and exciting Wilson Odobert signed from Burnley.

In addition, Spurs have also extended Timo Werner’s loan spell at the club, while letting Bryan Gil join Girona on a season-long loan.

That gives Postecoglou plenty of options upfront, with Richarlison and Solanke competing to lead the line, while Son, Kuluevski, Johnson, Werner and Odobert are competing for just two positions, along with youngsters such as Mikey Moore.

Son is better out wide, says Postecoglou

The Tottenham head coach insisted that Tottenham were quite short upfront last season, insisting that it is an issue that they have now resolved.

The Australian told Football.London: “I definitely think as much as the injuries at the back cost us last year and they did cost us, that was mainly because we lost three-quarters of our back line for a big chunk of time, but I still felt it was up front where we were most short and could improve the most,” said the Australian.

“A lot of that was that Richy when he played was outstanding, but he had a lot of injuries last year, so then we had to play Sonny inside. You know, it was Brennan’s first year at the club, he’s only 22 and his first year at a big club, but I still thought he did well. We had to sign Timo, we lost Perisic and Solomon first or second round.

“So, we were down two wingers. I really felt it was the area we needed to bulk up in the off-season and just going into the season with Dom and Richy there, two real good presences in the striking position.

“It doesn’t mean Sonny can’t play through the middle during the year, but I think we look a much better team when he’s out wide on the left. That’s the exciting bit that we were looking for improvement. We needed to improve in the front third and we have with bringing Dom in.”

Son can be really effective when he is leading the line against sides that give space to run in-behind while he struggles to have much impact when doing so against low blocks.

However, in Solanke, Spurs have found someone who can offer a physical presence up front against teams which defend deep while also having the pace to run in-behind if there is space to be exploited.
