Red Sox Homer Celebration To Have Minor, Meaningful Change

The Boston Red Sox were consistent with their home run celebration throughout the season, but there will be a small adjustment starting Saturday.

NESN's Tom Caron revealed on social media that he helped connect the Red Sox to Boston Athletic Association race director Dave McGillivray with the club before their matchup against the Houston Astros. McGillivray donated his 2024 Boston Marathon medal to the team by presenting it to Jarren Duran at Fenway Park, and it will be what they wear for their home run celebration for the rest of the season.

"A reminder the baseball season is a marathon," Caron posted on X.

Boston previously wore manager Alex Cora's medal from the 5K race he completed before the season. It's not clear what's going to happen to that medal, but it likely will be heading back to the Cora household.

McGillivray is a renowned runner having completed 165 marathons, including 50 consecutive Boston Marathons. In 1978, he completed an 80-day trek across the United States, running the 3,452 miles from Medford, Ore., to Medford, Mass. to benefit the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Red Sox will be honored to have his medal as they try to complete their marathon toward clinching a spot in the American League wild card.
