Report: Spurs never turned their interest into a firm bid for 24-year-old

One of Tottenham’s reported targets this summer appears to have evaded their clutches, but it seems the Lilywhites would have found it almost impossible to sign the player anyway.

No firm offer arrived from Tottenham

Spurs had been linked with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher for over a year, but it now looks like the midfielder is on his way to Atletico Madrid instead.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Fabrizio Romano tweeted that the England international had agreed terms with the Spanish side and that a €40m (£34.4m) deal was nearing completion.

Now, a report from The Telegraph explains Tottenham’s position in all of this, and it appears the Lilywhites were never even close to signing Gallagher.

The report states Spurs did not continue their pursuit beyond an interest, and never submitted a “firm offer” to Chelsea for their academy graduate.

It is said Chelsea had preferred to sell Gallagher to a club outside of England anyway, giving Atletico the edge.

And, financially, it is believed the La Liga outfit have offered Gallagher a deal which would have put him among Tottenham’s top earners, meaning Spurs would have had to push the boat out to compete.

Gallagher didn’t want Spurs move

Regardless, there is a belief that Gallagher himself had never wanted to make the switch across London to Tottenham due to his loyalties to his boyhood club (HITC).

Gallagher did recently reject a new contract offer from the Blues, which would have seen him boost his salary and extend his stay in West London by two years, with an option for a third (The Athletic).

It sounds like this deal was never going to happen for Spurs. Gallagher didn’t want it, Chelsea didn’t want it, and we were always going to get outbid when it came to a contract anyway.

It doesn’t really matter, though, as Gallagher would not really fit the profile of the midfielder we need right now.
