The USWNT takes the pitch once again on Saturday when the four-time gold-medal winners take on a very strong Japan team in the quarterfinals of the women’s soccer tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The American women had a perfect group stage, securing all nine points by winning all three of their matches, beating Australia 2-1, defeating Germany 4-1 and taking down Zambia 3-1 to get to this point.
Japan, meanwhile, opened the tournament by falling 2-1 against Spain but bounced back to defeat Brazil 2-1 and Nigeria 3-1 to get to this pivotal matchup against the USWNT.

Japan and the USWNT have a long history in women’s soccer, most notably facing one another in the Women’s World Cup Final in 2011, a game that ended at a 2-2 draw before Japan was ultimately able to pull out the win in penalties.
The USWNT exacted some revenge at the 2012 London Olympics, defeating Japan 2-1 to win the gold medal.
The two sides met as recently as April of this year in the SheBelieves Cup, a match that saw Japan take an early 1-0 lead before the Americans were able to storm back and secure the important 2-1 victory over their international rivals.
