Why Alex Cora Reversed Course On Red Sox Extension Claim

Back in late March, Alex Cora said he didn't plan on talking about his future with the Red Sox until after the 2024 season was over.

That proved not to be the case.

Cora and Boston finalized a long-term contract extension less than a week after the club returned from the MLB All-Star break. The manager entered the campaign on an expiring contract, but he's now set to be at the helm through at least the 2027 season.

During his appearance Wednesday on WEEI's "Jones & Mego with Arcand" show, Cora was asked about the change in his stance on in-season negotiations.

"We had an idea of what we wanted to do as a family," Cora said. "Obviously, the organization approached me. We talked a little bit right before that interview and then after that I think everything started -- it gained momentum at the All-Star break. Those three days, four days without the Red Sox and just the family and talking to Craig (Breslow) and what the project is and what the future is. The present, too, which is very important. But at the end of the day, man, it was a family decision."

Regardless of the reasons for the change, the Red Sox greatly benefited from extending Cora when they did. Uncertainty no longer hovers over the manager, and Boston now can turn all of its focus toward reaching the playoffs.
