Red Sox Make Additional Roster Moves Following Flurry Of Trades

Aside from landing two relief pitchers and sending four prospects the other way at the MLB trade deadline on Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox made additional roster moves.

The Red Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter to Triple-A Worcester and was subsequently designated for assignment. Wingenter was recalled from the WooSox on Monday. The 30-year-old made two appearances with the Red Sox after being acquired on July 6. He allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Boston also added right-handed pitcher Yohan Ramirez to the active roster ahead of the Red Sox’s match-up with the Seattle Mariners. Ramirez owns a 5.98 ERA in 37 games this season with the New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers. The 29-year-old has 172 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings in five years and has walked 86 batters while surrendering 20 home runs.

Right-handed pitcher Alex Speas was sent to Triple-A Worcester after being designated for assignment on Saturday to make room for Danny Jansen after the Red Sox acquired the catcher from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 27. Speas was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on June 29 but has not made an appearance in Boston.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made five trades ahead of Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline. Although none of the moves were blockbuster, Boston added four pitchers — James Paxton, Quinn Priester, Lucas Sims and Luis García — in addition to Jansen.

“Any time you can go into a deadline with a clearly defined shopping list and walk out feeling like you accomplished it, I think you feel good about it,” Breslow told reporters at Fenway Park. This team has shown that they are more than capable. We’re winning. We have our sights set squarely on the playoffs and deserve some reinforcements. I think the combination of the last couple of days and some guys getting healthy positioned us really well.”
