Kulusevski is convinced Spurs youngster has what it takes to go ‘straight to the top’

Dejan Kulusevski believes that Lucas Bergvall has the talent and the attitude needed to go straight to the very top of the game, insisting that the midfielder is now in the right environment for him to succeed.

Kulusevski takes Bergvall under his wing

As many would have expected when Spurs secured Bergvall’s services, Kulusevski has taken the youngster under his wing, with the pair seeming inseparable during the club’s pre-season tour to Asia.

The winger admitted that it feels great to have a compatriot with him at Tottenham and that the pair have been able to connect really well.

When asked about having another Swede at the club, Kulusevski told Football.London: “Honestly, it feels amazing. It’s just nice for me, you know, just to speak Swedish, to have a brother that did everything that I did when I was young because he’s from the same club.

“We had the same friends, same coaches when we were young, so you know, it’s cool and life is crazy, you know, you never thought a couple of years ago, but now we’re here together, and competing to win together. He’s a really good player, really good guy, and I’m happy that the club brought him in.”

When asked if he has become like a big brother to the newcomer, the former Juventus man said with a laugh: “I don’t know. You’ll have to ask him. I just know that I’m here for him, whatever he asks, but he’s very intelligent, he has amazing principles in life and that will take him far.”

Bergvall can go to the very top of the game

Kulusevski explained that while Bergvall’s talent is there for all to see, the youngster has also showcased the willingness to work hard to adapt to the new surroundings, given the step up in quality.

When asked about the impression the midfielder has made in his first few weeks, the 24-year-old responded: “He’s very good, obviously, like, everybody’s seen him. Then, of course, I haven’t seen him at this level and everything, like, we have to give him time; we have to give him time for a lot of new challenges, but what’s important is that the talent is there and the work rate.

“He’s a good guy, so we, the coaches and the players have to be here for him to help him in any way, if he needs it – maybe he doesn’t need it, and he can go straight to the top from the beginning.”

Like Bergvall, Kulusevski also left Swedish football at an early age to move to Atalanta and the winger insisted that leaving one’s comfort zone at a young age can only be good for a player’s development.

When asked about his decision to leave the Allsvenskan as a teenager, the Tottenham man said: “Yeah, for sure. I did something nobody has ever done, because at that age, they don’t go outside [Sweden], but I thought that was the right thing for me, so it was amazing, like, honestly. I think about it a lot.

“It was amazing. I have friends from all over the world that played in that Atalanta team. It was pretty similar to what we did at Brommapojkarna, so it was fun, and I think that it’s a good thing for young boys to leave all their security at home and try some more difficulty.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it would be unfair to expect too much of Lucas Bergvall this season as he is likely to have a steep learning curve in the Premier League, given the significant step up in quality.

Ange will want to ease him into proceedings, and we might not see the best of the teenager until next season.
