Gangwon director reveals Yang Min-hyuk rejected PL rival because he only wanted Spurs

A Gangwon representative director has revealed that another Premier League ‘big six’ team tried to sign Yang Min-hyuk this summer, but the player only wanted Tottenham.

After signing Timo Werner on a 12-month loan and Archie Gray from Leeds United relatively early in the summer transfer window, Spurs finally have signing number three secured.

However, Yang Min-hyuk will not actually join the North London club until January 2025 because he still has another six months of the K-League season to play with Gangwon FC.

Fortunately, Spurs fans won’t have to wait that long to see him in action as Yang has been included in the Team K-League squad to face Tottenham in a pre-season friendly this week.

Yang Min-hyuk only wanted Spurs

A director from Gangwon FC has now revealed that another Premier League club actually came in for Yang before Tottenham even made contact.

Describing the club as someone who won the Champions League recently – which must be Man City, Liverpool or perhaps Chelsea at a stretch – Yang is said to have rejected them in favour of Tottenham.

The director said during a live broadcast: “It is true that another Big 6 PL team that recently won the UCL had also enquired about Yang. That team had nice plans about Yang’s development and had approached us earlier than Spurs.

“But what I didn’t realize at the time was that Yang had his heart set on Tottenham. I even asked him if he wanted to go to that other club, but Yang straightly refused, saying he wanted to only join Spurs.

“To make it clear, it was Yang, rather than Gangwon, who made the choice to pick Tottenham as his next club. I respected the player’s wish.”

I suspect that Heung-min Son and Tottenham’s profile in South Korea probably had something to do with it, but Ange Postecoglou is also a great manager for young players at the moment.
