The 26-year-old was filmed doing the celebration for social media this week ahead of the upcoming Eredivisie campaign.

He could be seen tilting his shirt and sliding his head down in what looked like an unusual dance move.

Smal’s Feyenoord team-mates found it hilarious, as did football fans online.

One person took to X to write: “This is so awful it becomes awesome.”

Another joked: “Think how fuming you’d be if you concede in the last minute on FIFA and the bloke does that. Instant broken controller.”

A third commented: “Lool add that to the next FIFA asap!”

While a fourth said: “Gijs Smal. If it’s not the best celebration of the year…”

Smal joined Feyenoord in a free transfer from FC Twente last month and signed a four-year deal upon his arrival.

Football's most bizarre celebrations

SunSport has looked at some of football's most unusual celebrations...

Facundo Sava – mask: After scoring for Fulham against Charlton in 2002, Sava pulled out a mask from his sock and put it over his eyes before celebrating with team-mates.

Jimmy Bullard – team talk: After scoring a penalty against Manchester City, Bullard gathered his team-mates together and sat them down before pretending to give a team talk. Hull manager Phil Brown had given his squad a half-time team talk on the pitch after they went 4-0 down to City the season before, so Bullard recreated it.

Paul Gascoigne – dentist chair: Gazza scored for England against Scotland at Euro 1996 and celebrated by laying on the ground while team-mates squirted water into his mouth. The celebration was in reference to a drinking game that was played by the squad during a tour of east Asia.

Erling Haaland – meditation: The striker’s signature celebration. Haaland sometimes poses cross-legged with his hands out to the side after scoring. He did the celebration after scoring on his Premier League debut against West Ham.

The Eredivisie giants made four changes to their badge recently, but fans were barely able to notice.

The alignment of the words was altered slightly and the red side of the crest was made brighter.

Furthermore, the letter F was moved to a more central position with the gold line taken away completely.

Feyenoord have confirmed that the new badge will be phased in and not feature on the shirt until the 2025/26 season.
