Pundit urges both Tottenham and Arsenal to move for Premier League star

Gabby Agbonlahor thinks both Tottenham and Arsenal should make a move for Ivan Toney this summer as Brentford prepare to part with their number nine.

Ivan Toney looks to find a new team.

Ivan Toney has been a hot topic of conversation this summer with his current contract ending in 2025. With Brentford looking to recoup some of their investment, it would be wise to allow Toney to leave this pre-season and reduce the risk of losing him for nothing next year.

After being suspended for 8 months, Toney delivered an underwhelming total of 4 goals and 2 assists in 17 matches played last season for Brentford (TransferMarkt).

Brentford wanted around £80m for their star man earlier this year, but the price has dropped all the way down to £50m due to a severe lack of interest this summer (The Sun).

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all allegedly told Brentford that they do not plan on bidding for the England centre-forward, leaving just Spurs and West Ham in the race.

Could Tottenham be a fit for Toney?

Despite the Gunners reportedly pulling out of the race, Gabriel Agbonlahor believes it should be a no-brainer for both Spurs and Arsenal to push for Toney in the coming weeks.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT (23/7/24, 4:15 pm): “Ivan Toney – who is going to snap him up? If I am Spurs, I am getting him. If I am Arsenal, I am getting him.

“I think he would choose Arsenal over Spurs. But if I am these two clubs, I’d go and get him. I rate him highly.”

The Sun say that any Tottenham bid for Toney could depend on whether Richarlison is sold, while Jonathan David also remains a target for the Lilywhites.

Spurs Web Opinion:

While I am a huge fan of Toney and what he brings to the pitch, I’m not sure he fits the style Ange is looking for in his current system. Toney does a great job of finding space and lanes, my only concern is his work rate is too low.

Ange Postecoglou requires his players to press at a high level, forcing errors and turnovers. Richarlison, while not the most efficient striker, is a great example of how you can be a menace defensively as he tracks back and wins the ball.

What Toney lacks in work rate, I believe he makes up in clinical goals when given the opportunity. £50m would also be a bargain price for someone with as much Premier League experience as him.

With more games due to domestic cups and the Europa League this year, we need more cover in that area. I just wonder whether the money could be better spent on another player.
