The Athletic report that the coaching staff at Spurs have been impressed with Djed Spence during pre-season so far. But should this warrant him staying for another season?

Postecoglou looks to build on fifth-place finish

After beating most pundits’ expectations last season, Ange Postecoglou is looking to build on his impressive start to life in N17 by adding more talented players who fit his style of play this summer.

With Spurs set to play more games this year after qualifying for the Europa League, and the hopes of advancing further in domestic cups, there will need to be more cover within the team for rotation and injuries.

After a season in which Spurs let in 61 goals (Premier League), Postecoglou will surely be hoping to add to his backline this summer, after the additions of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Timo Werner further up the pitch.

There have also been plenty of outgoings this summer as well, including the departures of Joe Rodon, Ivan Perisic, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Ryan Sessegnon.

But will Djed Spence be added to that list?

Could Spence be the cover Spurs need at right back?

After a tumultuous couple of years at the club, Spence fighting his way back to the first team would be a high hill to climb. But after two standout performances from him so far in pre-season, the Spurs coaching staff are at least willing to give him another thorough look.

The Athletic report that Spence’s recent form in training and pre-season matches against Hearts and QPR has impressed the coaching staff (The Athletic).

After all, if Tottenham can fill the backup right-back slot with a player already at the club, it could free up funds to invest in other areas of the pitch this summer.

With Emerson Royal rumours continuing to rumble on, including links with AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, minutes could be available for Spence to seize (The Standard).

Even with Archie Gray’s arrival, who played at right-back and in midfield with Leeds United, Postecoglou could do with an extra option on the right next season.

One question remains – can Spence do enough on the pre-season tour of Asia to work his way into Ange’s plans for the 2024/25 campaign?

Spurs Web Opinion:

If previous behavioural and time-keeping issues with Spence can be addressed (The Standard)., I would welcome him to the first team with open arms. Spence brings a different dynamic to build up play with his speed and dribbling abilities than both Porro and Royal.

While he may lack the defensive abilities and emergency ability at centreback like Emerson, Spence brings an attacking element to cause issues for the opponent. His fearless attitude and vision were on full display during the QPR and Hearts game where he provided a goal and an assist in 90 minutes of play in both games (Sofascore).

With so much untapped potential, Spence should be allowed on the first-team and Spurs should focus their remaining assets on attracting a right winger or another striker.
