Journalist would be surprised if Spurs actually pull off deal, despite positive reports

Stunning reports have emerged in the past week that Tottenham are set to agree a deal with Aston Villa which would see Jacob Ramsey and Giovani Lo Celso swap places.

Ramsey and Lo Celso could swap clubs

Sky Sports reported back in early July that Tottenham would seek to thrash out a deal with Aston Villa over the swap of Giovanni Lo Celso and Jacob Ramsey.

The Argentine failed to make a mark on the Spurs first team last season under Postecoglou and with little time remaining on his deal, an exit looks possible.

The report from Sky stated that Ramsey is a long-term target for Tottenham and would fulfil what is believed to be a priority position this window for the club, central midfield.

DSports in Argentina then revealed on the 20th of July that a deal was agreed between Aston Villa and Spurs over a swap for Ramsey and Lo Celso, which would also include Tottenham paying the Villains £20 million.

It wouldn’t be Spurs’ first double deal this window either after Archie Gray and Joe Rodon went opposite ways in deals with Leeds United.

Darren Lewis would be ‘very surprised’

Darren Lewis was quizzed on the rumoured swap deal between Aston Villa and Tottenham whilst speaking to the Last Word on Spurs, but the journalist seemed unconvinced of Spurs’ chances.

He said: “I think it would be a terrific signing for you, but I would be very surprised if Villa were to sell or if Ramsey were to go.

“Ramsey is only 23 and he has such a high ceiling. As things stand, Villa have said they don’t want to sell. Even though you could offer the money and offer Lo Celso as well, I don’t think he would want to go, I think he would want to play Champions League football next season.”

Spurs Web opinion

Swap deals are notoriously hard to pull off, even though both these clubs have completed one this summer already.

The reason they are so difficult is due to what Darren Lewis stated above, it’s very hard to first, agree on a fee between the two sides that also includes a player, and then to get the players to also agree that swapping clubs is the right move in their career.

Should a deal be done, however, it would be an outstanding piece of business. Ramsey is still young but has potential as well as being homegrown.

Lo Celso’s current deal is rapidly running out and utilising him in a deal to earn a discount with Aston Villa could be great business.
