Opinion” Three ‘realistic’ signings Tottenham could make this summer

In a post-Euros, pre-Premier League month for football fans alike, our attention has now swiftly turned to the wheelings and dealings of the transfer window as teams prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

For Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham, welcoming starlet Archie Gray from Leeds sees a promising start in what feels like a crucial window for the Australian, but with work still to be done here are three more ‘realistic’ signings that could set Spurs up for a memorable season.

Federico Chiesa

With the surprising news that the once former wonder-kid Federico Chiesa has been made available by Juventus for just €25m (£21m – Fabrizio Romano), it didn’t take long for the Italian to be linked with a move to London.

Each of Spurs, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been linked with the Italian, as with just 1 year remaining on his current deal he looks destined for a move away from Turin (One Football).

Whilst Spurs already boast a roster of wingers including captain Heung-Min Son, Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and the on-loan Timo Werner; Chiesa’s versatility could still see him becoming a valuable member of Ange’s squad.

Although naturally playing off the left wing, Chiesa is comfortable playing anywhere across the frontline, evidenced by Italy’s Euro 2021 triumph as the forward started consistently on the right netting twice in the process.

Granted, the Italian’s return of 32 goals and 23 in 131 games for the Old Lady is hardly anything to ride home about (Transfermarkt), however, if Ange could help rediscover the form that earned the Chiesa a move to Turin in the first place he could be a welcomed addition at N17 at a bargain price.

Conor Gallagher

In what now feels like a staple of any transfer window, Tottenham have yet again been linked to a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Spurs have reportedly come close to a move for the Englishman before (Sky Sports), however, in what appeared a smart decision for the Blues with Gallagher starting in the second half of last season, Chelsea opted to keep the midfielder.

Whilst the arrival of Archie Gray may have alleviated the need for another central midfielder, Gallagher’s tenacity and work rate make him a textbook Angeball signing, and with the sudden yet expected departure of Pierre-Emile Hoijberg to Marseille, Ange may well be looking to replace the Dane (Twitter).

Last season, Gallaghers impressive return of five goals and seven assists in the Premier League saw him best all but one of Spurs midfielders, with James Maddison being the exception, whilst his 2.45 tackles per 90 saw him profile in the top 25% of midfielders in Europe’s top 5 leagues (FB Ref).

Under the reign of former owner Roman Imbramovic, Chelsea famously didn’t do business with Tottenham, with the Russian even blocking a deal for Carlton Cole (talkSPORT); however, with Chelsea now tasked with balancing the books and Gallagher representing a “pure profit” sale, the Blues may be yet be forced to offload Gallagher regardless of the suitor.

Granted, Gallagher may not be top of Ange’s shopping list, but with a rumoured price tag of £40m being enough to prise him from Stamford Bridge he could make a strong addition to the squad.

Ivan Toney

With Daniel Levy yet to replace Harry Kane following the Englishman’s record-breaking move to Bayern Munich last summer, a quality centre forward must surely be high on the agenda for this summer’s business.

Whilst Son’s 17 goals and 12 assists marked yet another fantastic season for the Korean, it’s evident to anyone watching Spurs that Son’s best work comes when he starts from wide.

And granted, Richarlison’s return of 11 goals and four assists in the league season saw a drastic increase from his debut campaign in 2022-23, it’s still abundantly clear the Brazilian isn’t good enough to spearhead the Lilywhites.

However, with murmurings that Richarlison could be in line for a move to the Saudi Pro League that could see Spurs net as much £60m (BBC Sport), this could fund a move for Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Amid personal issues and a length ban, last season was certainly one to forget for Toney, but there’s no doubting the forwards’ quality netting 72 goals and providing 23 assists in 141 appearances for the Bees.

The Englishman has also been likened to Kane in the past owing to his tendency to drop deep and involve himself in play having formed a notable partnership with fellow forward Bryan Mbeumo during their time at Brentford.

Toney has made no secret that he feels ready to depart the Bees this summer, and while there will certainly be competition for his signature, he could be the final piece in the puzzle for Ange’s frontline.
