How Prominent Red Sox Prospects View First-Rounder Braden Montgomery
PORTLAND, Maine — Braden Montgomery appears to be an impact talent once he returns from injury in the Boston Red Sox farm system.
Boston selected the Stanford/Texas A&M product with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. The outfielder may not see the field for an extended time while he rehabs from a broken ankle, though there’s plenty of intrigue around the Red Sox organization for his potential.
A pair of prominent Red Sox prospects Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell gave their recollections of past on-field competition with Montgomery following their return from the All-Star Break.
“I kind of grew up with Braden,” Mayer shared with reporters on Friday. “We played each other a lot. He’s such a great guy. He comes from a great family. Obviously, he plays the game extremely hard and extremely well. For us to pick him at No. 12, I’m super excited for him to be a part of this organization. He’s such a tremendous talent. More so than that, like I said, he’s just such a cool dude and a great person.”
“He’s always been one of the top guys in the class,” Campbell told NESN.com. “I was supposed to be in that class and got drafted early. … I know he’s down a little bit right now with the broken ankle. I’m excited to see him soon.”
Campbell continued: “He’s always been a really solid player. I think that’s the thing I remember most is him pitching. He ran it up.”
Montgomery had been an impact pitcher during his high school days and made a total of 27 appearances on the mound in his collegiate career. Now, the new Red Sox prospect will find his future home in right field with power at the plate and with his throwing arm.
