Sources tell Gary Lineker that Spurs owners can be ‘interfering’ about team selection

Gary Lineker has interpreted Ange Postecogluo’s recent comments about Tottenham’s fragile foundations as evidence that the Australian is not happy with the club’s ownership, suggesting that his predecessors have similar concerns.

Postecoglou, who has tended to toe the company line during his time at Tottenham so far, did something unusual on Tuesday after his side’s loss to Manchester City.

The Australian remarked that the 48 hours leading up to the game had revealed to him that “the foundations are fairly fragile” at the club and suggested that he now had to “go back to the drawing board with some things” (Football.London).

Despite being pressed repeatedly by various journalists to explain his comments, the Spurs boss refused to do so, and as a result, there has been a lot of speculation across the media over the last few days regarding what he meant by his comments.

Lineker has now chimed in, suggesting that Postecoglou’s comments point to his frustration with the club’s owners, pointing out that Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte expressed similar concerns.

The pundit said on Rest Is Football podcast about the Aussie coach’s comments: “He won’t be the first to have frustration at the Tottenham ownership. When this happened, you see old interviews like Jose Mourinho, who said, ‘I have really good contacts with my former clubs, except Tottenham’.

“Antonio Conte said pretty much the same thing, attacking the owners. I’ve spoken to one or two [former] managers there and they [the owners] can be a little bit interfering, let’s say, or can whinge a little bit about team selection from the upper echelons.

“Adding all those things together, I think there’s a little bit of a gripe about the leadership at Tottenham, way above [the playing side].”

The narrative is often far more powerful than fact and we are seeing the evidence of that, with Postecoglou’s comments being interpreted as a dig at the Tottenham owners, even though that might not be what the Spurs boss intended.

In fact, even Conte broadly had only positive things to say about the club’s hierarchy, with his spectacular rant after the 3-3 draw against Southampon being aimed mainly at the players.
