Postecoglou says this week at Spurs was the ‘worst experience’ of his career

Speaking ahead of the final weekend of the Premier League campaign, Ange Postecoglou was asked about the way he reacted to the conflict of interest earlier this week that had Spurs fans wanting the team to lose against Manchester City, and has admitted he ‘misjudged’ the situation.

It has been a most unique and unsettling week for Tottenham Hotspur. In the build up to the game against Manchester City on Tuesday night, many fans were more than happy to see Spurs lose the game and let their opponents win, in order to pull the rug from under Arsenal’s title ambitions.

Ange Postecoglou had humoured the suggestions ahead of the match, while insisting he was absolutely there to win and continue Tottenham’s own hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

After the game, the Spurs boss vented his frustrations, describing the club as ‘fragile’ both inside and out (Football.London). Apparently, he was particularly angry at one member of staff who joked Tottenham should field a youth team against City (The Athletic).

Ange Postecoglou admits he got it wrong

In his press conference (via Dan Kilpatrick), Postecoglou was asked about his reaction and how he feels about the situation now.

Postecoglou described the furore surrounding the City game as the “worst experience as a manager” he has ever had. He added: “I got a real anxiety within me of… what if we play as well as we can and they beat us 5-0? I’d hate to think of people questioning if I’d prepared the team.”

He went on to state that he absolutely cannot understand anyone wanting their own team to win, regardless of the repercussions, but admitted “I hold my hand up, I got it wrong. I was here the day before the game and I sort of mocked the whole thing.”

I’m very glad this has all been cleared up to a degree and that Ange has admitted he may have overreacted to the situation. It was a bizarre circumstance for all of us, and it should never happen again, hopefully.
