New York Red Bulls hold off New England for 4-2 victory

HARRISON, NJ– The New England Revolution (2-1-8, 7 pts.) were defeated 4-2 versus the New York Red Bulls (5-5-2, 20 pts.). in a match on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey to a crowd of 00,000.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Aljaž Ivačič starting in net with a backline of (left back) Nick Lima, (center backs) Xavier Arreaga, and Henry Kessler, along with (right back) Andrew Farrell. The midfield spots were manned by Matt Polster (left defensive midfield) and Mark-Anthony Kaye (right defensive midfield), with Carles Gil appeared ahead of them (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Tomás Chancalay (left wing), Esmir Bajraktarević (right wing), and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

The match began with New England starting from the center circle. Midfielder Carles Gil began by playing the ball backwards to Aljaž Ivačič, who then elected to play the ball all the way up to the RBNY defensive third and connected a long pass to Tomás Chancalay.

New York had the first chance of the match came in the 3rd minute when midfielder #12 Dylan Nealis’ effort was blocked away by Mark-Anthony Kaye.

Just one minute later, New England had a chance of their own when Tomás Chancalay’s effort into the area was met with a calm catch by goalkeeper #31 Carlos Coronel.

In just the 5th minute, RBNY took the early 1-0 advantage.

Defender #15 Sean Nealis’ played a long-through ball over the top to find forward #9 Lewis Morgan, who ran past Andrew Farrell for the breakaway goal for his 8th goal of the season.

RBNY got a second chance in the 12th minute coming from a free kick that was cleared, until another foul occurred.

RBNY got their next major opportunity in the 14th minute, coming from that freekick. The set piece from roughly 25 yards out was struck by midfielder #47 John Tonkin and saved by a diving Aljaž Ivačič.

RBNY had yet another amazing opportunity in the 18th minute when midfielder #10 Emil Forsberg struck the crossbar from close range.

Entering the 24th minute, New England leveled the scoreline.

Following an in swinger cross into the area by Tomás Chancalay, the ball found the head of Carles Gil and went past goalkeeper #31 Carlos Coronel for his 4th goal of the season. This is Carles Gil’s 100th career goal contribution for the New England Revolution.

New England had yet another chance in the 28th minute when Tomás Chancalay received the ball in midfield, took on two RBNY defenders and took a shot that was blocked away for a corner kick.

Just one minute later, Tomás Chancalay had yet another effort, this time from long distance, that was met with a diving stop by goalkeeper #31 Carlos Coronel for yet another corner kick.

RBNY had a chance of their own that was cleared by Henry Kessler. There were shouts at a handball but play continued. New England then had the next chance of the match in the 37th minute when his shot attempt went wide of the net.

Moments later, drama ensued as VAR intervened and noted that prior to Bajraktarević’s effort, Henry Kessler handled the ball in the box. RBNY was given a penalty kick and Henry Kessler was issued a yellow card.

In the 43rd minute, the ensuing penalty kick in the  by midfielder #10 Emil Forsberg, his right footed effort was buried into the bottom right corner to give the New York Red Bulls the 2-1 advantage.

In the 45+2 minute, New York had yet another chance to score when midfielder #8 Frankie Amaya’s effort went wide of the goal.

After the 45+7 minutes, the match entered halftime level with RBNY ahead 2-1.

The second half began with New York starting from the center circle. Forward #9 Lewis Morgan played the ball backward to defender #3 Noah Elie, who then launched the ball up to New England’s defensive third.

RBNY had the first moment of the half when an ensuing free kick taken by midfielder #10 Emil Forsberg was cleared out of the box by Xavier Arreaga. There were initial shouts for handball and the center official immediately went to his ear for VAR. Play resumed with no penalty given.

New England’s first chance came in the 52nd minute when Giacomo Vrioni drove down the left flank and took a shot that went wide left of the net. After the shot, Vrioni was called for offsides.

RBNY’s next best chance came entering the 54th minute when forward #13 Dante Vanzeir’s effort was missed touched and went wide of the net.

Just a minute later, New England had a chance of their own when Carles Gil’s left-footed attempt was caught and saved by goalkeeper #31 Carlos Coronel.

New England had yet another opportunity as the match entered the 58th minute when Esmir Bajraktarević’s delivery into the area was met with a diving clearance by a RBNY defender and out for a corner kick.

RBNY had yet another chance when forward #13 Dante Vanzeir collided with Henry Kessler inside the penalty area in the 59th minute. No foul was given and the ball was cleared.

Entering the 64th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter used his first substitution of the match to replace Esmir Bajraktarević with Dylan Borrero.

In the 66th minute, Revolution midfielder Dylan Borrero was issued a yellow card for an unknown reason.

Just two minutes later, New York Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz used his first substitution of the match to replace forward #13 Dante Vanzeir with forward #11 Elias Manoel.

New England then had the next chance of the match in the 71st minute when Andrew Farrell’s low-driven delivery into the area toward Tomás Chancalay was caught by goalkeeper #31 Carlos Coronel.

Entering the 75th minute, play was stopped due to an injury to Henry Kessler. He would return immediately after receiving treatment.

New England’s next best chance came in the 77th minute when a low-driven cross was deflected out for a corner kick. The ensuing corner kick was met with a header by Xavier Arreaga and caught by goalkeeper #31 Carlos Coronel.

In the 82nd minute, Revolution midfielder Tomás Chancalay was issued a yellow card for fouling midfielder #47 John Tolkin.

Following the foul, New York Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz used his second substitution of the match to replace midfielder #10 Emil Forsberg with forward #17 Cameron Harper.

In the 84th minute, New York added to their advantage.

Following a give-and-go play between midfielder #19 Wiki Carmona and defender #3 Noah Elie, the ball was centered to find a wide open forward #11 Elias Manoel for his second goal of the season.

Entering the 86th minute,  RBNY head coach Sandro Schwarz made his final change of the match by replacing defender #2 Dennis Gjengaar replaced midfielder #19 Wiki Carmona.

Just two minutes later, New England head coach Caleb Porter made his second and third changes of the match by replacing Andrew Farrell and Mark-Anthony Kaye with Ian Harkes and Emmanuel Boateng.

In the 89th minute, New England pulled one back

Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng slotted a cross to find Giacomo Vrioni for the goal. Initially, the Assistant Referee called the play offsides, and it was determined that he was onside after video review.

Less than 1 minute later, Red Bull regained their 2 goal advantage.

Forward #9 Lewis Morgan found forward #17 Cameron Harper with a back heel for him to take on Aljaž Ivačič for the easy finish. It is Harper’s first goal of the season.

Entering the 95th minute, midfielder Dylan Borrero collided with RBNY midfielder #75 Daniel Edelman. He immediately went down and grabbed for his left knee. Borrero, returned this season from a left ACL tear. A stretcher came out and he was replaced immediately. Noel Buck replaced him. Not Good.

After the 90+6 minutes, the match ended with Red Bull taking all three points after a 4-2 victory.

Caleb Porter and the New England Revolution (2-1-8, 7 pts.) return home to Foxborough, Massachusetts to face Eastern Conference side Philadelphia Union (3-5-3, 14 pts.).
