Former PL striker reveals Daniel Levy ruined his chances of joining Spurs by offering £1.5m

Remember Saido Berahino? The former West Brom striker has been talking candidly on social media recently about his career, and was asked about how his proposed move to Tottenham Hotspur fell through in 2015.

Berahino was ultimately something of a one-hit wonder. In the 2014/15 campaign with West Brom, the forward bagged 20 goals in all competitions, including 14 Premier League goals (Transfermarkt).

As such, Berahino attracted a lot of interest in his services, with Tottenham being the main pursuant during the summer of 2015. But, no matter how hard Mauricio Pochettino tried, he couldn’t get his man.

That looks to have been a blessing in disguise for Spurs, with Berahino’s form evaporating from there on out. He joined Stoke a couple of years later but found goals hard to come by, before moving to Belgium, enduring a difficult spell at Sheffield Wednesday, and joining his current club, AEL Limassol in Cyprus.

Daniel Levy didn’t want to pay up for Berahino

So, why did that move to Tottenham fall through? Well, Berahino himself has spoken openly about the matter on social media this week, and blames Daniel Levy for the negotiations coming undone.

A fan asked him, “What actually happened behind closed doors for this move to fall through? Was it West Brom that moved the goalposts? Or did Spurs do something to scupper the deal?”

Berahino replied: “Right Spurs payments were unacceptable and West Brom wanted £30m. But Levy would pay £1.5m and the rest in instalments.”

Another social media user asked: “How close was you to joining Spurs? Berahino kept it short and sweet in his reply, saying: “90 per cent.”

Spurs absolutely dodged a bullet on this one. All we saw of Berahino from that point forward was a bad attitude, a low work rate, and very few goals. He is one of the main reasons I am so wary of us ever sniffing around a striker who has one good season.
