SSE Airtricity Premier Division

Two of the sides who will be hoping to fight out this season’s Premier Division title race will square up at the Brandywell on Friday night as Derry City host Shamrock Rovers in front of ‘live” RTE cameras.

In what is shaping up to be a really competitive division, games against fellow challengers could well prove decisive- something that won’t be lost on either manager this weekend.

The Hoops needed a late equaliser when the two sides met at Tallaght earlier in the season and while Ruaidhri Higgins admitted that it was a decent result for his side, he also insisted that ‘moral victories’ wouldn’t get the job done.

Speaking at his press conference on Wednesday, the City boss said that the first quarter of the season had been ‘up and down’ and felt his side needed more if they were to take it to the next level.

“It’s important to be ruthless in front of goal when we’re dominating games, but it’s not just about goals.

“We need to be more ruthless defensively too- from front to back- and be able to manage games better when we have to.”

City have again been without the likes of Pat Hoban, Sadou Diallo, Patrick McEleney and Cameron Dummigan in recent weeks and while he was content that things are gradually improving, manager Higgins was hopeful that at least one of that quartet may be ready for Friday.

“It’s only Wednesday and we have a couple of lads who aren’t far away at all. I’d like to think we’ll be working off the same squad as at Drogheda but with probably one addition” he said.

One person who looks certain to be included in the home ranks this weekend is Will Patching and the former Manchester City Academy player will be playing his 100th game for the Brandywell club if, as expected, he gets the nod.

“In my three years at the club, Will is right up there with the best players I have worked with. He’s one of the best players in the league, not just here” said Higgins.

“He’s had to play in a deeper role, given our injuries this season, but he’s been excellent whatever he’s been asked to do.

“His goal against Dundalk last week was outstanding and he carries a real threat for us. We’re delighted with his form and it’s clear he is really enjoying his football at the minute.

“Friday night should be a great occasion and it’s a game that always brings out the best in our supporters.”

“They have a massive role to play, and we’ll do everything we can to give them a huge three points.”
