Oldham Athletic Match Preview

0 2

The Coasters travel to Oldham this Friday looking to achieve our first double over a team this season. Fylde produced arguably one of the performances of the season last time out against Oldham can we produce this once again at Boundary Park. The Coasters are looking for back to back wins after coming from behind to beat Oxford City 2-1 last weekend courtesy of goals from Nick Haughton and Joe Westley.

The Coasters currently sit in 13th, 5 points ahead of the relegation zone however they have played a game more than a handful of teams below them. Chris Beech will be looking to make sure no complacency slips in and the Coasters confirm their status in the National League for another season. Gaining points over the Easter period would go a long way to achieving this and with so much football to play, nothing is guaranteed.

The Opposition

The Latics currently sit 2 points outside the crucial playoff places and with 6 games to go, wins are crucial in the fight for promotion. However, with this race towards the end of season, Oldham’s form recently has stuttered with only 1 win in their last 6 games with 4 draws and a defeat making it hard for the Latics to progress up the table.

The main reason for this stutter in form is simple, lack of goals. 3 goals in their last 5 games is not the record wanted of a playoff contender and with the firepower of Garner and Norwood it’s hard to see where it is all going wrong at the moment. However, the draws are not turning into losses and that still keeps them within a shout of the playoffs. Picking up points against Chesterfield and Bromley is impressive but it’s all about turning 1 point into 3.

With games against Playoff contenders Altrincham, Rochdale and Halifax all upcoming, Micky Mellon will target this game as a must win. One thing guaranteed this Friday will be both teams going at it for the vital 3 points to either stay up or go up.

National League

AFC Fylde 3 vs 0 Oldham Athletic

Goalscorers: Fylde- Jon Ustabasi (X2), Josh Kay.

Classic Clash:
This week’s classic clash comes from earlier in the season when the Coasters put on a show when the Latics came to town. With the biggest away following this season arriving at Mill Farm, a big crowd was to be expected and from a Coasters point of view certainly weren’t disappointed. Goals from Ustabasi and Kay gave the Coasters a 2 goal advantage before Liam Hogan was sent off for a second yellow card. Fylde went on to control the game and Ustabasi confirmed all 3 points with a screamer into the top corner.

Key Players:

James Norwood- The former Tranmere man links up with former manager Mellon and is a key player in an Oldham team full of quality across the pitch. An experienced head at this level with an eye for goal and a match up with him and the Coasters defence will be one to watch this Friday.

Liam Hogan- The leader of the pack and also a serial winner at this level. A key man at the back who is a vital part in the heart of their defence. Played the majority of this season and will play a huge part in Micky Mellon’s playoff push for Oldham.

Mark Kitching- Since joining the club back in the 2022/23 season, Kitching has been a key player under any management system missing only one game at his time at the club. A natural left footer, Kitching is great going forward and also at the back, one to keep an eye on this Friday.
