Son reveals what he spoke to Hugo Lloris about after Southampton 4-1 win

0 6

Son Heung-min has outlined the importance of Tottenham beating Southampton without goals from Harry Kane or the South Korean.

Tottenham put on an impressive performance against Ralph Hasenhutt’s side on opening day as they came back from a goal down to put four past Gavin Bazunu in the Southampton net.

Son and Kane were notable absentees from the scoresheet as Spurs secured all three points courtesy of goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Dejan Kulusevski and an own-goal from Mohammed Salisu.

While Son assisted the goal that gave the North London club the lead, he failed to add one of his own in the match. Kane and Son both had opportunities to get on the scoresheet, but weren’t quite able to find their shooting boots at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The South Korean international spoke with Hugo Lloris after the game about how the priority should always be the team’s success rather than individual accolades.

They also discussed the importance of other people providing goal threats beyond the usual Kane and Son, which should benefit the team moving forward.

Son told Football.London in a post-match interview after the win vs the Saints: “It was a very important win in a really positive way. We are very happy to start the season with three points. It’s really important for everyone to contribute with goals.”

“When you win 4-1 you expect me or Harry to score but it’s a good sign. I spoke to Hugo after the game and it’s good if someone else is scoring because the collective is more important than the individual. Today the performance was really good and the most important thing was the three points.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is good to see that we convincingly won against an opponent who troubled us quite a lot in the previous campaign. What makes that result even more impressive is how we did not have to depend on Kane and Son for the goals either.

It shows how Antonio Conte has not made the team overly dependent on Kane and Son in terms of goalscoring, which is beneficial in the long run. After all, we should not struggle just because one or both of them have an off-game.
