‘I’d be shocked’ – Paul Merson makes new top four prediction after Spurs beat Arsenal

01

Paul Merson has predicted Tottenham to finish ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League top four race and would be surprised if Antonio Conte’s side did not win their last two matches.

Spurs managed to keep their Champions League qualification hopes alive with a 3-0 win over Arsenal in the North London derby on Thursday

The result means the chase is likely to go down to the wire with Tottenham now just one point behind their fourth-placed rivals, and both teams having two games remaining.

Conte’s men host Burnley on Sunday lunchtime while Arsenal travel to Newcastle on Monday night, before Norwich and Everton await the teams respectively on the final day of the season.

And Merson expects Spurs to kick on from their derby triumph by winning both of their fixtures, which would give them the upper hand over their north London counterparts in the top four hunt.

He wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “I could not believe what I was watching. They have opened the door to the top four now and I’d be shocked if Tottenham don’t win their last two games.

“I can’t see Arsenal winning their last two games. Newcastle in their last home game of the season is a difficult game because they will have a point to prove.

“Everton at the Emirates? You’d take that. Everton have picked up results lately. But Jordan Pickford has had to make a load of top class saves.

“If Arsenal win their last two games then fair play but for a young team like that to come back from a derby defeat like that and do it, that would be a big feat. I just don’t see how Arsenal handle the pressure. They didn’t handle it at Spurs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even though it is narrowly in Arsenal’s hands at the moment, Spurs will fancy themselves after producing two excellent displays on the bounce.

The fixtures on paper look to be in Spurs’ favour, but ‘on paper’ doesn’t always cut it when it comes to the Premier League, so it is about going out on the pitch and getting the job done.
