Brackley Town V Chester FC - Match Thread #59 - Vanarama National Leag

0 99
After a thumping 4-0 win on Monday we are on the road for the last time of the campaign as we make the trip to Northamptonshire to play Brackley Town away today in our final match of the season and our final away match of the season where we look to bow out on a high. It will be Steve Watson’s final game in charge as manager, so it will be an emotional occasion with some of our players also expected to don the blue and white shirt for the final time too. Brackley have been one of the best sides this season, so it will be a very tough game given they have the meanest defence in this league, however they can no longer win the title so hopefully for our sake they will take their foot off the gas a little bit as they could have one eye on the play-offs. I just cannot wait for this horrendous season to be over, because it really has been a tough old slog right from the beginning, but that said I will still miss my weekly fix so I will have to make the most of today.

Our last match was on Monday as we won 4-0 at home against Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC in our final home game of the season in what was a very one-sided affair. The first-half was dominant from us as we created numerous chances, compared to the opposition who had just the one effort on goal. After just five minutes we were off the mark as Rob Apter finished home from close range to make it 1-0 to us. Soon after Danny Livesey nodded home a header for us, but sadly it was disallowed due to a push. Just the one goal in that half which was enough for us to be in front at the break. Meanwhile, the second-period was even better from us as we added a further three goals to rip the visitors apart. Six minutes in Kevin Roberts made it 2-0 to us by scoring one of the easiest goals he will ever net. Five minutes later Danny Livesey went so close to getting on the scoresheet again, but his strike was saved onto the post. On the 67th-minute mark loanee Marcus Dackers made it 3-0 to us by sweeping in a loose ball. 10 minutes later Declan Weeks wrapped the game up to make it 4-0 to us, by stabbing home from a few yards out. A comprehensive way to end our home campaign as we were rampant against a sorry Bradford side.

Brackley Town are having a fantastic season as they have spent pretty much the entirety of it battling it out between Gateshead for top spot. Over the last few weeks in particular, the title race has been enticing as the Northamptonshire side and The Tynesiders have both switched positions, however on Monday it was Gateshead who were declared champions thanks to Brackley blowing a two-goal lead at Hereford FC. It has still been a tremendous season for The Saints though, as they are a part-time side who have had the same core of players for a number of years now, so that is testament to manager Kevin Wilkin who has consistently worked wonders for them. We could face one former Seal this afternoon, who is Shepherd Murombedzi. Left winger Shepherd joined us in January 2018 where he deserves a lot of credit for playing for free. However, just a month later in February 2018, Shepherd departed us to join Brackley Town which is where he has been at ever since.

Quite remarkably, I am on track to be in attendance for every single match in both league and cup competitions this campaign, which is incredible given the season we have had. I have been very close to completing ‘the card’ on a couple of occasions, but obviously Covid intervened so I am looking forward to finally achieving that feat this time around which will be a great achievement. Will be my fourth trip to Brackley Town’s version of St James Park this afternoon, so hopefully we will put in another spirited performance to bow out on a high, ahead of what is set to be an interesting week next week.
