MATCH REPORT: Worthing v Dartford Women

0 6

A game of two halves on a cold and windy day by the coast.

The Darts were certainly struggling in the first half to carry on the goal feast they had recently been on in recent weeks. Finding it hard to adapt to the swirling wind and cold conditions, although they managed to take an early lead through a brilliantly taken header from Emily Vaughan after a throw in routine from Meg Mansfield and Emily Read with Meg hitting a pinpoint cross. 1-0 to the Darts.

After this the visitors took the foot of the gas and allowed the hosts back into the game with a great long-range effort from Ella Newman to make it 1-1.

Further work along the Worthing right brought a decent cross that allowed Newman to nip in and score from ten yards to make it 2-1. Jade Charlton in the Darts goal managed to keep her team in the game with a fine save from another long effort. Although Shauni Griffiths and Lizzie Adams had chances to reduce the deficit. Half time 2-1 to the hosts.

The 2nd half started with the Darts more on the front foot with Emily V acrobatically overhead kicking the ball towards goal only for skipper Lizzie Adams bravely attempting to get her head to the ball 5 yards out only to get a knock on the head by the defender. Lizzie had lengthy treatment and luckily recovered as she scored an excellent lob after being set again by the impressive Emily V, making it 2-2.

Jo Woodgates went close with a long-range free kick as the Darts started to dominate, next a deep cross from Sacha Brinkley found the feet of Em Vaughan who did the rest with a typical poacher’s goal putting the Darts back in the lead 3-2.

The introduction of fresh legs in Georgie Davis, Nicha Dyett and Paris Smith taking over from Kim Green, Sacha Brinkley and Katie Butts who had worked their socks off gave the Darts a lift.

Soon Em Read hit a great through ball to Nicha who controlled the ball and strongly held off a defender to set Alicia Gibbs whose sight on goal was helped by Shauni taking a defender with her as Alicia lined up to stroke the ball home from the edge of the box making 4-2 to the Darts. Shauni and Georgie made extra chances at the end as Darts dominated, leaving Jade in goal having to keep herself warm. A great 2nd half ended with all points coming back from the coast.

It was great to have a quiet a few supporters including Club Chairman Steve Irving along which the girls and management are extremely grateful for.
