‘Had to be brave’ – Lewis Holtby reflects on his career and time at Tottenham

0 10

Lewis Holtby has admitted he took a risk to join a top English club in Tottenham but does not regret the choices he made throughout his career after a largely unsuccessful stint in North London.

Holtby joined Spurs from Schalke in 2013 as a 22-year-old carrying a reputation as one of German football’s brightest talents.

Spurs initially attempted to sign him to a pre-contract to secure a free transfer for the following campaign, but pursued a quicker deal by paying a £1.25 million fee to bring him to the Premier League in January.

However, the midfielder failed to hit the heights many expected him to reach in N17, and loans to Fulham and then Hamburg saw him eventually return to his native Germany on a permanent basis.

Now at 2. Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel after spending the last two seasons with Blackburn Rovers, Holtby revealed he was willing to take a chance to play for a big side in the top tier of English football and has no regrets about the choices he made along the way.

He told Werder Bremen magazine DeichStube: “At that time [in 2013] I got the chance to play for a top club in England [Tottenham].

“I used this. Sometimes you have to be brave. Nobody can say in which direction it would have gone if I had stayed at Schalke at the time.

“But I’ve loved every club I’ve been at. I’m happy with the choices I’ve made.”

Holtby was one of those players where we just didn’t see his true potential and it was disappointing to see the way his time at the club panned out. He did provide some elements of what he could offer, but the stint was just so short in the end.
