‘Too weak’ Tottenham man has hit dead end with nowhere to turn – pundit

03

Eric Dier has nowhere to turn at Tottenham because of his struggles at both centre-half and in midfield, according to one pundit.

England-born Dier initially made his name in Portugal with Sporting, moving to Spurs in 2014. Since then, he has remained one of the most regular names on the team sheet – largely in midfield. However, he began to adapt his game last season, operating at centre-half under Jose Mourinho.

He has since proved a key option at the back, trading his place in the midfield.

Nevertheless, he has often faced criticism this season, including – for instance – his error in February’s defeat to Chelsea.

Ex-Spurs boss Mourinho admitted that the England international had faced a “crisis of confidence”.

But despite working his way back into the team after six successive bench appearances, Frank McAvennie insists that the 27-year-old has nowhere to turn.

“Dier’s back getting a game for them but he’s not a centre half,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He’ll not get a game in the midfield because of the dynamics now. You’ve got to be busy and active and that’s not his game. There’s no place for him.

“He’s certainly not a centre half either, he’s too weak. Tottenham need an overhaul and they’re short of defenders, that’s why he gets a game.

“He could go this summer, it would not surprise me if he went.”

Dier could play Tottenham overhaul role

Tottenham are supposedly planning an overhaul this summer and Dier could indeed be one player who could leave.

However, striker Harry Kane’s future will prove the biggest talking point of the summer for the north London club. He has publicly expressed his desire to win silverware, with Spurs looking unlikely to make next season’s top four.

Meanwhile, midfielders Harry Winks and Dele Alli could also leave. PSG showed January interest in the latter, while Winks has been linked with Southampton.
