Coaching masterclass

0 3
Marcelo Bielsa is famous for his attacking, high intensity, possession based football.

It has made him a household name and sees him talked about as one of the great innovators of the game.

Up their with Johan Cruyff, Rinus Michels, Arrigo Sacchi, Ernst Happel, Helenio Herrera, Nereo Rocco.

Their are successful managers who win trophies, their are managers who change football, their are some who do both.

Bielsa is up their in terms of influence with all the greats.

Diego Simeone, Pep Guardiola, Zinedine Zidane, Mauricio Pochettino, Marcelo Gallardo are just a few of the many managers influenced by Bielsa's attacking football.

In fact a fantastic article which i will copy into the comments reveals that of the 280 retired players who have played under Bielsa, 163 are football coaches or managers.

His style of play is legendary and truly inspirational.

And all this makes this next statistic all the more wonderful.

Critics love to hammer us over our open style of play.

Say we cant defend.

Well for a team whose manager believes in attacking football we are able to defend extremely well if we decide to be a bit less gung ho.

Under Bielsa when he decides he wants us to be a bit more pragmatic magic happens.

9 games with less than 50% possession.

We have won 8 and drew 1.

During that time we have beaten 3 teams who were promoted that season (WBA, Fulham and Sheffield United).

Drew with a side currently 5th in the Premier league having won 12 of 17 under Thomas Tuchel.

And beaten Quadruple chasing Manchester City

We have managed 6 clean sheets during those matches.

And scored 18 goals.

Giving us a record of

P9 W8 L0 D1 Scored 18  conceded 3 gd 15+ 28 points.

Their are managers and teams whose entire style is based on having less possession and they would be hard pressed to have a record like that.

It is a testament to MB's coaching ability that he is able to organise a team to such a degree that when required they are able to switch to a style totally different to their primary one and not just do it well but do it almost perfectly.

It isnt that Marcelo Bielsa teams cant defend, it is a case that attacking is more entertaining and that is what football should be, entertainment.

Indeed when defending is called for and a bit more of a cautious approach is necessary, Marcelo Bielsa teams are incredibly good at it.
