Perhaps it was natural to fear the worst heading into this fixture?
Like Newcastle, this one had banana skin written all over it.
Palace are not dissimilar to us or the Magpies in that they’re bloody difficult to break down.
Fortunately, we needn’t have worried.
Though not quite a masterclass in game management – Palace were unlucky to have a goal and a penalty ruled out – a far more clinical first-half display was enough to send us up to third.
The intriguing decision to hand a debut to Ait Nouri paid off handsomely, with the young Frenchman capping off a MOTM display with a sweet opener.
And with Dendoncker and Neves controlling the midfield, a second always seemed likely.
Podence is beginning to look a real star and it was a delight to see the diminutive Portuguese bag his first of the season.
Both he and Neto are offering fluid support for Jimenez, occupying pockets of space that make us far less predictable in attack.
That could explain the continued absence of Traore who, despite his obvious talent, does have a tendency to make us slightly one dimensional.
No doubt Nuno will be hard at work developing his game though, he’s far too dangerous to be a bit part player for much longer.
I still worry a little bit about our defending down the right hand side, though I’ve every confidence Semedo will only get better under Nuno and co’s guidance.
Indeed, that’s a fourth clean sheet in just seven games. If we can can keep that up and continue to be more ruthless in front of goal, who knows where this season could go.
