I think it’s less about if we have the ‘best’ players. Only one team can win a tournament, and it’s rarely the best squad of players. It’s more about creating a system that capitalises on the strengths you do have (often in a short space of time, which is why international football can be a bit crap) and developing a mentality that you can a) be proud, b) players enjoy being a part of and c) sees you regularly being on the right end of ‘luck’.

Southgate mastered the second, and ultimately failed at the first.
