Yeah I think this is the OP's point.

I can state with absolute certainty that May would have more goals than Kyogo has now, he'd have taken one of the chances he's had.

Is he a better player overall? I don't think so.

I think a happy May finally playing in the Championship would have got a few goals but it was absolutely right to replace him if we were serious about promotion.
