Club form vs Country: did that argument take a big hit yesterday?

This is something that Ive swung back and forth on I think over the years. Obviously, it is great seeing guys perform for their club, and that is logically a foot in the door to getting ample opportunities with country. But after watching yesterday.........I think I am back on terms of "who cares what your club form is like?" If you play like crap for the national team, who cares about your club amazingness? Then we get guys like Gio who obviously are not in the best club situations, but...
