Yeah, you and Rab are both right - the reality is that over two legs Man. City have only themselves to blame - they should have pissed it.
But the ref wasn't subtle. Short of doing a lap of the pitch waving a Madrid shirt above his head at the (early) final whistle - singing !Hala Madrid! - and then bombing into the plunge bath with the Madrid players...I'm not sure what more he could have done.
I suppose he could have headed one in from a corner, but yeah, it wasn't subtle.
