When buying a new car and transferring the plate over, how long do you have to take it off the old and presumably put it on retention before applying to put it on the new vehicle. I think you have to wait for the V5 to arrive before applying, then getting new plates made, is that correct?

Son is collecting new car on Sunday. It looks easy enough to apply to remove it from current one and retain it, but what about insurance which has that number on it? Do we apply on Saturday or what? Gov.uk website has all the forms but no advice.
