How Alysa Liu Ignited New Fan Frenzy in Figure Skating

Alysa Liu didn’t just provide a spark at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games; she ignited a total rebrand. More than an Olympic champion, Alysa Liu has emerged as a transformative force for U.S. figure skating, turning Olympic achievement into widespread engagement and enthusiasm.

By capturing the first individual Olympic gold medal for an American woman since 2002, Liu has done more than end a 24-year drought. Her “second act”—returning to the ice at 18 after a two-year retirement—is being credited with a historic surge in domestic interest, viewership, and grassroots participation that the sport hasn’t seen since the 1990s.

Shattering the “Olympic Bump”

Historically, U.S. Figure Skating sees a 10% increase in “Learn to Skate” enrollments following a Winter Olympics. However, preliminary data following Liu’s victory in Milan reports a shared 20% to 30% increase in sign-ups at various rinks around the country according to U.S. Figure Skating chief executive officer Matt Farrell.

“There is a level of relatability with our current Olympians that is translating into increased attention on our sport and interest in trying it out,” he told Golden Skate. “With Alysa’s down-to-earth personality being showcased across so many different industries, or Amber (Glenn) being an incredible advocate for mental health and the LGBTQ+ community, or Ilia (Malinin) statistically pushing the boundaries of sport, we’re tapping into so many new fan bases. We’re increasing an appreciation for who our athletes are and what they’re capable of. We continue to hear anecdotal updates from our clubs that their successes and likability quotients are encouraging new athletes and families to try our programs.”

The phenomenon, termed the “Liu Effect” by media outlets like People Magazine is significant. Young skaters see a relatable American champion performing elite skills and think: “I want to try that.” Parents, inspired by media coverage, are enrolling kids in lessons. Adult beginners are hitting the ice inspired by her story.

However, fans on social media and forums debate whether her attention is “just hype” or real impact. The reality?  Liu’s influence extends far beyond medals; she has shifted mainstream awareness, creating excitement, media coverage, and organic growth rarely seen outside Olympic years. Even her coach, Phillip DiGuglielmo, remarked: “She is just exploding. Even her agents are overwhelmed.”

“She just is there to share her art with the audience, and she was so excited to do that on the world’s biggest stage,” he told Golden Skate. “She just enjoys skating. Now she’s enjoying all the things that come along with an Olympic gold medal. She is such a natural and is so relaxed no matter what situation you put her in. I’m so proud of her!”

Olympic Gold = Attention You Can’t Buy

In a country where Olympic success often drives interest in winter sports, Liu’s achievements rekindled the excitement once seen in the Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski eras. What makes Olympic gold so impactful is its storytelling potential. Liu’s journey from prodigy to young champion is compelling. Media coverage highlighted her triumphs, personal challenges, and the joy she brought to skating. This narrative extends beyond technical skill: casual fans now have a story to follow, creating long-term attention for both Liu and the sport.

“I’m just really proud and happy about the legacy they’re leaving on the sport — especially Alysa, with her story of stepping back for her mental health,” said Amber Glenn, regarding Isabeau Levito and Liu. “I think that really shows you never know what the journey to success is going to look like. I hope that message reaches the skating community — that it’s okay if it takes time.”

Casual viewers have also been drawn to the sport. Community reports show that watching the Olympics has become a favorite tradition for families and friends, with more people tuning in specifically to catch figure skating performances.
Olympic victories are rarely fleeting; they drive sponsorships, social media engagement, and participation at all levels.

In Liu’s case, her success is translating directly into renewed interest and investment in U.S. figure skating, marking her as a central figure in the sport’s visibility.

Social Media & Pop Culture Impact

Liu’s influence and her infectious personality extend beyond the rink. Before the Olympics, her Instagram following hovered around 300,000, modest for an elite U.S. athlete. After her Olympic gold, that number surged to over five million. At press time, her followers were clocked at over eight million.

This explosive growth matters. Social media is the modern megaphone for sports popularity. Millions of followers mean more eyes on Liu’s training videos, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content. Suddenly, figure skating isn’t just a niche sport; it’s trending content that casual fans consume and share.

The social media surge also influences sponsorships and broadcasting. Brands now see Liu as marketable to a massive audience, including people who might never watch an entire competition. Her online presence drives broader attention to the sport itself — fans discover other skaters, share event clips, and engage with figure skating in ways that were rare before her rise.

This modern athlete formula: athletic excellence + online engagement = pop-culture status is exactly what Liu exemplifies. She’s brought attention not just to herself, but to figure skating as a sport, a story, and a national phenomenon.

The defiantly joyful skater from Oakland, Calif., isn’t confined to competitions; she’s also a cultural figure. For instance, she’s presented at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, mingled with stars like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and appeared in People Magazine. Most recently, she also appeared in Laufey’s “Madwoman” music video, released on April 13, 2026.

Now, the 20-year-old is currently headlining the 2026 Stifel Stars on Ice tour across the U.S. alongside teammates Ilia Malinin, Amber Glenn, and Madison Chock & Evan Bates.

“It’s been really fun!” she told NBC Olympics while on tour. “I’ve just been enjoying every day with the cast and being on the tour bus. These are the biggest shows I’ve ever really skated at. The crowd is great!”

Why People Actually Care About Liu

Beyond achievements, Liu connects emotionally with fans. She shares unfiltered behind-the-scenes glimpses, shows the human side of competition, and skates with joy and authenticity.

Her relatability is crucial. While traditional skating narratives focus on perfection and pressure, Liu emphasizes enjoyment, expression, and resilience. This approach draws in casual fans who may have felt intimidated by elite skating. People don’t just admire her—they feel a connection.

By blending technical brilliance with authenticity, Liu keeps audiences invested in her story and, by extension, the sport itself. Emotional engagement ensures fans follow skating across seasons, helping sustain renewed interest well beyond Olympic years.

Bottom Line: Alysa Liu Is a Game-Changer

U.S. figure skating needed revival, and Liu delivered. She’s not just winning medals; she’s creating fans, boosting social media engagement, inspiring participation, and embedding skating into mainstream culture.

Perhaps the most significant reason for the renewed interest is Liu’s relatable approach to elite athletics. By being vocal about her mental health, her time away from the sport, and her “unbothered” competitive mindset, she has removed the barrier of perfection that often made figure skating feel inaccessible.

“Medals do not validate me,” Liu said during the Games. It is this exact sentiment—prioritizing joy and autonomy over the “win-at-all-costs” mentality—that has resonated with a new generation of American parents and athletes.

Now as the 2025-26 season comes to a close, the story isn’t just about the gold around Alysa Liu’s neck. It’s about the millions of people who are watching, clicking, and maybe going out to lace up their first pair of skates.
