Cape Cod Synchronized Skating Classic 2021 Preview

This weekend, teams will make their way to Cape Cod, Massachusetts for the 26th Annual Cape Cod Synchronized Skating Classic hosted by the Bourne Skating Club at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center. 

The competition kicks off Saturday with the open juvenile division, where eleven teams will compete. The Colonials are coming into this event after winning the Boston Classic with a score of 44.47. They’ll be looking to improve upon that score and keep their place at the top of the podium. They can expect a strong challenge from Team Excel, Superettes, and CNY Blizzard – these teams also finished on the podium at Boston Classic with there was less than a five point spread between them. DC EDGE, the 2020 Eastern Section Champions, and Team Magnifique, fresh off a bronze medal at Porter, will also be looking for a podium finish. Synchro Stars, Team Rinx, Lower Cape Starlettes, Winterettes Blue, and Steel City Blades will round out the division.

On the ice next will be the Aspire beginner division, where three teams will compete. Team Rinx, Connecticut Rinkettes, and Team Excel will all be hoping to put out clean skates.

Ten teams will compete in this year’s preliminary division. After a winning score of 24.18 at the Boston Classic, Team Excel will be looking to stay on top. They can expect tough competition from New Jersey Skyliners, The Colonials, and Skyliners, who also landed on the podium at the Boston Classic. Also looking to put out strong performances and fight for a podium spot will be DC EDGE Blue, Shooting Stars, DC EDGE Red, Mirror Images, Central Park Skyliners, and Gate City Synchro. 

The Aspire pre-preliminary division will see three teams compete; Snowflakes, Team Excel, and CNY Chill.

Eleven pre-juvenile teams will take the ice next. After winning the Boston Classic with a 35.65, Skyliners will be looking to build on that momentum and improve upon that score. They’ll face a challenge from Connecticut Rinkettes, who finished less than a point behind them in second at the Boston Classic. Boston Classic bronze medalists, Synchro Stars, will also be looking for a podium finish. These three teams will face a challenge for the podium from DC EDGE, and Munchkins, who won the bronze and pewter medals at the 2020 Eastern Sectionals. Synchro Stars, NESC Starlings, Pieces of Ice, Mirror Images, CNY Storm, and Winterettes Red will also be looking to put out strong performances. 

The competition will continue with the intermediate division where four teams will compete. After placing second at the Boston Classic, Team Excel will be hoping to move up on the podium and improve upon their 53.46 score. Star Mates, who placed fourth in Boston with a 51.42, will also be looking to increase their score. Scores in the intermediate division have been tight across the board this season, so CP Ice and Steel City Blades will be looking to put out strong skates and scores.

With just one team competing, the junior short program is next. Skyliners Junior Developmental will debut their short program for the season, but will not be competing the long on Sunday. 

After a short junior division, Aspire preliminary will compete. Team Rinx, Winterettes White, Team Excel and Connecticut Rinkettes will make up the four teams in this division.

Two teams will compete in the open adult division. Ocean Blades and The Colonials will skate for the top spot.

Finishing up the day on Saturday, Hayden Select will exhibit their Elite 12 freeskate.

The competition resumes Sunday morning with the open masters teams. The Colonials and Maine DownEasters will debut their programs for the season, both hoping to top the podium.

With just one team competing in the novice division, Ice Mates will be looking to improve upon the 67.16 they earned at the Boston Classic.

Next on the ice will be the juvenile division, where six teams will compete. After placing second at the Boston Classic with a 44.15, Skyliners will be looking to improve both their score and their place on the podium. Team Excel and Mini Mates earned the bronze and pewter medals at the Boston Classic and will be looking for strong skates and new season’s best scores. These three teams will be challenged by the 2020 U.S. pewter medalists, DC EDGE, who will be debuting their program for the season. CP Ice and Shooting Stars will round out this division and both teams will be looking to put out strong skates.

Three collegiate teams will compete next. Team Excel, Boston University, and University of Massachusetts all competed at the Boston Classic and will be looking to improve upon those scores. With a strong season debut of 80.98, Team Excel will be hoping to land the top spot here. University of Massachusetts competed last month at the Boston Classic, and they’ll be looking to increase their score. Boston University will be debuting their program this weekend and is hoping for a strong start to their season.

In the adult division, Team Excel will be looking to maintain their spot at the top of the podium and increase the 53.84 they earned at the Boston Classic. In Boston, Esprit de Corps were close behind with a 50.35, so they’ll be looking to claim the top spot this time. Also competing will be Mirror Images and Empire Edge. Empire Edge is new to the adult division after previously competing open adult.

Esprit de Corps masters will close out this year’s competition. They are the only team in this division, but they’ll be looking for a clean skate and an improvement on the 38.62 they earned last month.
