Virtual Competitions: Spotlight on Colonial Classic 2021

Another large synchronized skating competition that will be happening virtually this season is the 2021 Colonial Classic.  The director of events and marketing for the Colonial Figure Skating Club, Heather Plotkin, explained that they decided to go virtual after running the successful Colonial Cyber Series.  With all of the uncertainties surrounding team travel and local rink restrictions, they felt that the virtual platform was the best way to ensure the health and safety of all the teams competing.  And, without the travel restrictions they are hoping that teams from all around the world will be able to compete as well.

Teams will be able to submit their videos through a google form and will receive a protocol with their results after the judging process is complete.  There is currently a video tip sheet posted on the Colonial Classic website to help teams get the best videos of their performances as possible.  They are planning on hosting a virtual viewing party of their event that allows teams to watch and react to their scores like they would in a traditional Kiss & Cry.

Similarly to the Dr. Porter Classic, they will also feature a “Best of Element” event.  They will be offering the same elements as the Dr. Porter Classic and will be run similarly, so check out our article on the “Best Of Elemet” event to learn more about the specifics of this event.  Teams will not be allowed to use props like batons or PVC pipe to “connect” at a distance because U.S. Figure Skating has decided that that would change the nature of the sport; so the “Best of Element” event is a great option for teams who are unable to connect.

While this season is going to look very different; these virtual competitions provide an excellent opportunity for teams to showcase their hard work and to have a set goal in mind to keep athletes motivated!
