Kalamazoo Kick-Off Classic Wrap-Up 2019

This past weekend, more than 130 teams competed at the 20th annual Kalamazoo Kick-Off Classic, hosted by the Greater Kalamazoo Skating Association in Michigan.  This competition marks the season debut for many teams. It is full of excitement as teams unveil their themes and set the tone for their season.

Open Juvenile

Open-juvenile Group A kicked off the competition on Saturday morning.  Chicago Radiance made their way to first place in the 11-team group. Mentor Ice Diamonds placed second with 4/2. Chicago Skates scored a 3/3 majority, which put them in third place.  Dazzlers rounded out the podium in fourth. Group B consisted of 12 teams, and Starlights ended up at the top of the leaderboard with a 3/2 majority. Glenview Blades claimed second place, and Dazzlers placed in third. Crystallettes finished in fourth.

Senior

Adrian College exhibited their senior short program and earned 60.57. Later they placed first in the free skate, skating to a ‘Four Seasons’ medley and earning 106.49. They were the only team entered in the senior division.

Collegiate

In the collegiate event, Adrian College’s “Aladdin” program earned 84.83 points and first place.  University of Michigan came in second with their “Beatles” program that scored 79.79. Western Michigan University earned 70.42 and wowed the crowd with a “Wicked Witch” themed skate for third place. Liberty University ended in fourth with a score of 45.94.  Michigan State withdrew from the event.

Open Collegiate

Adrian College once again cleared the open collegiate field with first place ordinals across the board.  Miami University came in second. University of Missouri made quite the comeback while finishing in third. University of Michigan ended in fourth.

Masters

Allegro! prevailed in the open masters field with a 5/1 majority and a first place finish.  Kalamazoo Kinetic claimed second and Infinity Onyx finished in third. Allegro! also came out on top in the masters field with a score of 41.78. Infinity Onyx and Starlights finished in second and third respectively. 

Intermediate

The insanely competitive intermediate division was topped by Teams Elite, who earned 57.87. Starlights earned 45.62 which set them in second place.  Dazzlers chugged into third with their “Polar Express” theme and earned 43.69. In fourth was Kalamazoo Kinetic, with a score of 43.24.

Juvenile

The juvenile division consisted of six teams. Teams Elite captured first place with a score of 40.51. Crystallettes’ program earned 35.66, putting the team in second. Starlights earned third with a score of 34.88.  Wisconsin Inspire made an appearance on the podium and claimed fourth with 30.60.

Adult

Allegro! captured the adult title yet again with 49.69 points. Starlights’ program earned 36.17 for second place. Infinity Onyx claimed a 29.51 and ended in third place. In the open adult division, The Lakers led the way and ended in first with a 3/1 majority. The Lake Effect Flurries and Allegro! finished in second and third respectively. 

Novice

Starlights swept the novice division with their “Titanic” themed program and a score of 78.48. Teams Elite, skating to “Proud Mary”, came in second with a score of 74.28. The Crystallettes’ emotional program earned 69.72 and a third-place finish. Saint Louis Synergy edged into fourth place with 56.85, just 0.96 points higher than Cleveland Ice Storm.

Preliminary

Twelve teams competed in the preliminary category.  Teams Elite rose to the top of the leaderboard with a 4/1 majority. Crystallettes placed second with a 3/2 majority. Cleveland Ice Storm and Starlights finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Pre-Juvenile

Arctic Edge Unity placed first in the pre-juvenile division with a 3/1 majority. Chicago Skates Red followed in second with a 5/2 majority. Cleveland Ice Storm and Chicago Radiance took spots in third and fourth. Ten teams competed in the event. 

Synchro Skills

Chicago Skates took first place in synchro skills 1a.  Saint Louis Synergy, Dazzlers, Michiana Ice, and Hockettes placed second through fifth to round out the group. Crystallettes dominated synchro skills 1B by receiving a 4/1 majority. Cleveland Ice Storm placed second, while Livonia Icettes and Ice Sparklers claimed third and fourth.  

Dazzlers won synchro skills 2A with a 4/1 majority.  In second place was Synchro Saint Louis Jade Blades. Infinity claimed third, and Chicago Red Line ended in fourth. Livonia Icettes moved to the top of synchro skills 2B with a 4/2 majority. Crystallettes skated into second place, and Chicago Skates and Onyx followed in third and fourth place. 6 teams competed in the synchro skills 2c division. Madison Ice Diamonds ended in first. Glenview Blades placed second, and Cleveland Ice Storm and Starr Blades finished in third and fourth.

The competition concluded with an exhibition by Michiana Ice.
