One TeamMVMT Camp: North Carolina

OneTeamMVMT is a non-profit organization created by Lisa Miadovnik after two decades of competitive synchronized skating. During her synchronized skating career, she skated for multiple teams in Canada, including Nexxice Senior, and was a part of the Canadian National Team. Lisa attributes her motivation to create OneTeamMVMT to her love for the sport. “After 20 years in the sport, I had so much passion for it, and wanted to give back in a meaningful way, Lisa said to Get It Called, “so, with a group of other synchro enthusiasts, we met and developed the original concept of our organization and the 4 pillars behind it, that haven’t changed to this day; unite, develop, promote, support.”

OneTeamMVMT is known for its black logo T-shirts, their booths at competitions, and now more recently, their developmental synchro camps. Lisa started coaching worldwide at age 25 which inspired her to move forward with OneTeamMVMT and their synchro camps, “the more I worked with new teams, the more I realized… we needed to find a way to bring people together, so that we could become an interconnected community and share our knowledge, rather than operating as a series of ‘small islands’. Having run hockey camps for years, I knew that synchro camps would be a great way to achieve this community, and so the hard work began.” This year alone, OneTeamMVMT has hosted developmental camps in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

The U.S. camp was hosted by Triangle Formation Synchronized Skating and took place in Raleigh, North Carolina for its second year in a row. The camp was put on with the help of 12 team captains and five session supporters (representing the senior teams of Miami University, Les Supremes, Crystallettes, Adrian College and Skyliners). Four feature presenters (on topics of injury management, IJS/6.0 judging, rhythm and timing, and nutrition), two feature coaches (Paula Wagener and Maikki Merilehto), two supporting coaches, (Jannika Lilja and Lisa Miadovnik) and the Raleigh camp head coach Marilyn Langlois. Marilyn is a world medalist, an international choreographer, and the head coach of Les Supremes Junior and Senior teams. With the combination of all these qualified individuals together in one place, the developmental camp was an incredible success.

Raleigh team captain and Adrian College’s Elizabeth Hume tells Get It Called, “The OneTeamMVMT camp was such an amazing experience. The opportunity to empower young athletes to reach for their goals through collaboration is something truly special that Lisa Miadovnik has created … it was so special to watch the love of synchronized skating grow in so many young athletes as the weekend went on. It is so important to promote the sport at the root level to it can one day eventually be in the Olympics.”  Volunteers are the backbone of the OneTeamMVMT development camps. Every session supporter and team captain volunteered their time for the success of this camp. This aspect of service creates an environment of successful individuals driven by love for our sport and aimed to give back and inspire the future generation of synchronized skaters. Triangle Formation was the hosting team for the U.S.-based camp and provided many wonderful parents, coaches, and skaters that served as volunteers for this camp. They all lent a hand to bring the best camp to all the skaters who attended.

Skyliners senior member Jordan Alexander explains her service to Get It Called; “I choose to volunteer with OneTeamMVMT because the organization embodies some of the best values of synchro – unity, fun, inspiration, growth, and passion. The organization also encourages collaboration between teammates, competitors, and coaches in an effort to help progress the sport for the next generation. At OneTeamMVMT Camp you have the chance to learn from some of the world’s top coaches while also getting to skate with national/international athletes. As a skater who once looked up to skaters in my position, I volunteer in an effort to give back, inspire, and empower the next generation. Together, we can help create new opportunities for synchronized skating.” OneTeamMVMT Camp is designed to inspire the future generation but also serves as an inspiration to every individual involved. Miami University senior member Brooke Martin describes OneTeamMVMT Camp as, “an inspiring and humbling experience that reminded me of why I fell in love with synchro.”

Looking to the future, OneTeamMVMT wants to continue to develop and grow synchro with the eventual goal of the sports inclusion in the Olympic Games. With spirit wear sales to help raise money, the nonprofit organization looks to support skaters and teams all around the world.  Many teams and individuals have gotten t-shirts in support of the organization’s cause. If you would like to support OneTeamMVMT you can donate on the website, purchase spirit wear, attend a development camp, or stop by one of their booths they have at many events.  Be sure to follow both OneTeamMVMT and Get It Called on social media to stay up to date on events, fundraisers and competitions.  For more updates on the camps this summer, follow the hashtag #OTMCamp19
