Day 3 Roundup – FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2022 – European Qualifier 2021

With only one slot on offer for the Hockey World Cup, the teams here in Pisa have to be the outright winners!

Match 7: Ireland v Belarus 3-2

A very tight game saw top-ranked team Ireland beat Belarus by the smallest of margins. 

Winning goalscorer Niamh Carey, (Ireland) “It was a tough game like we scored two goals early on and they got one back just because we weren’t focused. After that it was pretty much a fight, which could have gone either way. It was great to score the last goal for the team and win the semi-finals. The next game will either be Wales and Scotland so again, we are expecting another tough one.”

Match 8: Wales v Scotland  0-0 SO 3-1 

It took a shoot-out to separate these teams, as both teams remained scoreless at full time. Sophie Robinson netted her goal to push Wales 3-1 ahead in the shootout with Scotland unable to push the game to a sudden death shootout. 

Rose Thomas, Wales said “It was really tight match. We knew that it was going to be difficult against Scotland, but proud of how the girls came at them and we already know them well. It makes it quite a close contest, but really proud of how we create pilot chances. I think it’s going to work pretty hard offensively towards the end there through quite a lot of stress. The team is happy to go to the final and it will be exciting to play against Irish girls for a place in the World Cup!”
