Man climbs to top of catchfence during Dover NASCAR race

Despite the man sitting atop the fencing, NASCAR did not stop the race to get him down.

A man climbed atop the catchfence in Turn 4 during Sunday’s Monster Energy Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway, but NASCAR did not stop the race to get the man down.

Social media posts of the man sitting atop the fencing began surfacing toward the latter portion of the AAA 400, though he was never mentioned by Fox Sports 1, which was televising the race. The man eventually climbed down on his own volition and was detained by track security, who then turned him over to the Dover Police Department.

The unidentified man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and offensive touching on a law enforcement officer. Because the man was intoxicated, he is currently being held at the Dover Police Department for at least 8 hours and then will appear before a magistrate judge to determine bond.

This is the second time in three years a fan has climbed and sat atop the catchfence while a Cup Series race is in progress. The last incident occurred Sept. 6, 2014 at Richmond International Raceway. That man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. He later received a suspended sentence.
