Eilidh excels on world stage
RTWFC’s Eilidh Paterson achieved lift off at her first World Championships – held in Rio, Brazil, in April – by blasting to an excellent 18th place against 126 of the planet’s best cadets.
Despite a major fire at one of the competition venues on the morning of her event, Eilidh found a way to stay focused, win all of her poule bouts and catapult straight into the round of 64.
She then proceeded to dispatch Chang of Taipei 15-4, before tangling with Aina of Italy in the last 32. Eilidh once again fenced brilliantly, but two contentious red cards turned the tide in Aina’s favour, helping the Italian number 1 scrape to a 15-14 victory. It was agonisingly close but also an absolutely awesome performance by one of Britain’s star fencers.
Eilidh had already delivered a stellar season of results, featuring double British championships on the same weekend and consistent top 10% finishes on the European circuit, so it was fantastic to see her sign off on her cadet years in such superb style.
