2021 April Tournament Recap

0 10

This is our first tournament with another club in attendance since our last open tournament in April 2020 before the pandemic closures. We’ve held monthly tournaments since the start of the new year, but it’s only been All-American Fencing Academy fencers. In April, we invited Greensboro Fencing Academy to join us and it was a great tournament and the fencers looked like they made some new friends!

In the youth event, Atticus went undefeated in the pool rounds, while Greensboro fencer Emery Alexander gave everyone a good challenge taking 2 victories in the pools. Coming in second seed after the pools was Max with 3 wins.

However, in the direct eliminations, Nathan and Scott battled it out for the semi final rounds where Nathan was able to oust Scott 10-7. Max pulled out a win against Greensboro’s Emery in the semi finals, 10-5. The gold medal bout put teammates Atticus and Max once again against each other. In their previous tournament in February, both Max and Atticus met in the gold medal bout where Atticus walked away with a 10-1. However, in April, Max went toe to toe with Atticus leading the whole time eventually winning 10-6, giving Max his first gold medal!

In the teen and adult tournament, we had a total of 24 fencers! Originally a combined men’s and women’s event, we had enough of both genders to split the event. Women’s foil had a total of 9 fencers, while men’s foil had 15. We had 14 guests from Greensboro between the two events against 10 of our own.

First, congrats to the All-American Fencing Academy fencers who competed in their first event! This was the first tournament for Weston Black and Gianna Megill.

In the Women’s event, we ran a single pool of 9 fencers so that everyone had plenty of fencing in the pools. Mackie Hinds from Greensboro seeded 2nd after pools dropping only 2 bouts against Isabelle and Elinor. Gianna posted an amazing 3 wins in her pools while Flora came very close to toppling fellow teammate Elinor. Elinor seeded third from the pools also dropping only 2 bouts. Isabelle went undefeated in the pools only giving up 12 touches.

In the elimination rounds, Gianna once again gave Elinor a tough battle, but Elinor was able to emerge victorious, winning 15-12. However, Mackie from Greensboro halted Elinor’s march to finals winning 15-4 in the semi finals. Meanwhile, Melissa Hooper from Greensboro was also having a great day with 5 wins in the pools, upsetting higher seed and teammate Maria Robbins. Isabelle defeated Melissa in the semi-finals. The finals saw Isabelle who was in 1st seed against 2nd seed Mackie Hinds. Isabelle ended the day undefeated in the pools and and eliminations, winning the gold medal against Mackie 15-6.

In the men’s foil, the event was split into 3 pools with 5 fencers each. One pool was flighted to create some social distancing. In the individual pools, Gabriel and Bruce from placed 1st in their respective pools, while Arlo Leake from Greensboro placed 1st in the 3rd pool. Daniel Johnson seeded 2nd in the same pool while Weston took 2 wins to place 3rd in the same pool.

Bruce ended up seeding first giving up only 4 touches while Gabe seeded 2nd giving up 6 touches. Arlo Leake from Greensboro seeded 3rd, while Daniel Johnson takes the 4th seed.

While Bruce and Gabe had an unobstructed march to the finals. 3rd seed Arlo Leake was upset in the first round by 13th seed and teammate Rob Clark. Leo Hinds in 5th seed defeats Daniel in the round of 8. Colton Culliton from All-American also made the Final 4.

Bruce and Gabriel defeats their respective semi-final opponents and faced each other in the the finals with Gabe eventually winning 15-9.
