Art reviews: NOW at the SNGMA | Charles Avery at the Ingleby Gallery

A week into the National Galleries of Scotland’s fifth NOW exhibition, Anya Gallaccio’s carpet of 10,000 red roses is already starting to change. The blooms in Red on Green are looking more than a little wilted, and a soft smell of rotting flowers is beginning to waft into the nearby rooms. Paisley-born Gallaccio, who came to prominence in the 1990s as one of the Young British Artists, is best known for her sculptures using ephemeral materials: her Turner Prize show in 2003 featured real apples rotting on the branches of bronze trees. The roses, I’m told, will rot then petrify; by the time the exhibition closes, they will be perfect, dried versions of themselves.
