Art review: Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show 2019

Edinburgh College of Art has just finished a major refurbishment of its splendid building. Everything inside is freshly painted – except the floors. They are a historical palimpsest. In what was formerly the Head of Painting’s studio, for instance, my guide, Gordon Brennan, director of undergraduate studies in the college, was able to point to both William Gillies’s and Robin Philipson’s splatters of paint still visible on the floor. They are distinct because they worked in different places in the room. Invisible from the street, a huge array of solar panels on the roof, apparently the largest on any public building in Europe, means that the college is admirably green.
