A summer night, a long time ago, I was dispatched to the coast to cover some drama. It had been raining, with enough heat left to waft the scent from pine woods into the road. I can still remember the car, a Morgan, roof down, always the roof down, and savouring the woodland aroma, the Ford engine’s rorty exhaust, the joy of a job done and the drive home.
